Kidney failure is the last stage of chronic kidney disease. It is also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Kidney failure means the kidneys have stopped functioning well enough for that person to continue to live without dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Kidney failure is usually caused by other health conditions which have permanently damaged (harmed) the kidneys little by little, over time.

When the kidneys get damaged, they can't function as well as they are supposed to. If the kidney damage persists and becomes worse and the kidneys are able to do their job less and less efficiently by the day, it leads to, "chronic kidney failure". Kidney failure is the last and most intense stage of chronic kidney disease which is why kidney failure is also known as end-stage renal disease or ESRD for short.
